A Fresh Approach to Creativity..
My story
I’m Flora, a mixed media painter, collage artist, and installation maker. I create layered artworks and immersive sensory environments that explore memory, texture, and transformation. My work celebrates the overlooked, bringing hidden moments, materials, and stories into the light.
Creativity runs through my family across generations. Painters and musicians in my immediate family—my mother and paternal grandfather—along with my brothers, one a painter and the other a musician, and a father who makes pottery for pleasure, inspired me to experiment, explore, and embrace a wide spectrum of creative expression. More distant relatives, including an opera singer, also carry the creative spark in their genes. Growing up in this environment instilled a love of making, curiosity, and playful experimentation.
From an early age, a few perceptive Art and English teachers noticed my innate creativity despite my ‘shy’ disposition and undiagnosed AuDHD at the time—that meant I was often overlooked by other teachers. Their encouragement and nurturing helped me develop confidence in my creative abilities and set me on the path of artistic exploration.
My journey has been far from linear. I trained at cookery school, earning a chef’s diploma, before following a strong urge to enrol on a foundation course in Art and Design, which I completed with distinction. I eventually cobbled together a foundation degree, but motherhood put my university education on pause. I attempted to complete my degree in 2023, but financial and family priorities meant it wasn’t the right time. What I gained from dipping my toes back in, however, was a realisation: in the 12 years since completing my foundation degree, I had learned so much through life experience that completing the third year felt almost unnecessary.
My tastes and inspirations often juxtapose my creations, almost like music in informing them. I love to incorporate contrasting modes of delivering my message and relating to my audience—a lot of my work is created in an intuitive, channelled splurge and later brought down to earth through my own perception of “what it is all about.” My practice has been shaped by outsider art, documentary photography with strong emotive narratives, uncanny portraits, cabinets of curiosities, surrealism, naïve art, Arte Povera, theatre design, and folk art. These influences inform the way I layer, collage, and construct both objects and immersive sensory environments.
A late-in-life AuDHD diagnosis gave me insight into the intensity of how I experience the world—through colour, texture, sound, and movement. This awareness informs everything I do, whether composing a layered canvas, designing an installation, or guiding others in creative workshops.
Alongside my studio practice, I lead group workshops and one-to-one sessions, creating inclusive spaces for exploration and expression. I help people use collage, texture, colour, and making to discover themselves, notice what’s hidden, and experience transformation through creativity.
Now based in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, I share a studio with a local upholsterer, where I continue to experiment with painting, collage, and immersive installations—inviting curiosity, connection, and engagement through every piece and space I create.</p>
